BIO:
Joel Esler is a Senior Security Consultant at Sourcefire. After six years of service in the United States Army as a Communications Engineer, Joel continued to work for the Department of Defense as a Security Analyst for the Regional Computer Emergency Response Team — South, where he worked with various federal agencies including LIWA (1st IO Command), DISA, Air Force, Navy, FBI, CIA, and NSA. Joel was initially brought on the team as a Network Security Analyst, where he excelled at in-depth packet and network forensic analysis. Joel’s expertise allowed him to be selected to lead the Computer Defense and Information Assurance Branch of the RCERT-S, which held him responsible for many aspects of Vulnerability Scanning, IDS Deployment, and Snort Rule creation for the Army.
Joel left the RCERT-S to work for Sourcefire, Inc; where he travels the world installing and configuring customer Sourcefire and Snort deployments, performing public speaking engagements, and teaching Sourcefire and Snort classes. Having visited over 100 customers, Joel has configured gear in many of the Fortune 50 companies in several different industries, including Banking, Government, Travel (Airline and Rail), Manufacturing, and SCADA (Power) Environments.
Joel is also an Incident Handler for SANS at the Internet Storm Center, the largest free threat analysis cell in the world and a GIAC Gold Advisor responsible for the technical grading of the SANS Gold certification process.
